What Are Veneers?

Understanding the Basics

Veneers are a type of dental prosthetic made from wafer-thin shells of ceramic porcelain material. They are designed to fit perfectly over your existing enamel, covering up the front chewing surfaces of your teeth.

This is similar to a dental crown, but while a crown is meant to cover the entire tooth, veneers only cover the front surfaces of your teeth. Veneers are not meant to treat damaged teeth, but are used to treat cosmetic dental issues like uneven and misshapen teeth, gaps in your smile, stained teeth, and more.

Versatile Cosmetic Treatment

The Benefits of Veneers

Choosing veneers has a number of great benefits. First, veneers have a lifespan of 10-15+ years with proper care. They also look and feel just like real teeth, so your new smile will look bright, natural, and attractive.

They are also extremely versatile and can be used to treat just about any cosmetic dental issue, no matter how severe. In addition, the placement process is minimally-invasive, and it only takes 2 quick appointments over a period of 2-3 weeks to restore your smile with veneers.

What to Expect

The Veneers Placement Process

After Dr. Scott approves you for veneers, you’ll come in for your first appointment at our office. Your teeth will be cleaned and Dr. Scott will numb your mouth. Next, he will use a dental drill to remove a thin layer of enamel from each tooth that is receiving a veneer.

Once your teeth have been prepared, Dr. Scott will take impressions of your teeth using dental putty. Then, these impressions will be sent to a dental lab so that your veneers can be manufactured. You’ll be sent home with a set of temporary veneers to wear until your next appointment.

You’ll come back to our office in 2-3 weeks when your permanent veneers arrive. Dr. Scott will check each one to ensure they fit perfectly, and bond them into place with a powerful dental cement, completing the procedure.

Maintenance & Aftercare

How to Care for Your Veneers

One of the best things about veneers is that you can treat them just like your normal teeth. Brush twice a day for two minutes, floss once a day, and come into our office every six months for a cleaning from Dr. Scott.

To prolong the lifespan of your veneers, do not bite very hard foods (ice, almonds) with your front teeth, and avoid chewing on non-food objects (fingernails, straws, pens & pencils, etc). It’s also important to remember to never use your teeth as tools to do things like tear open packages or rip tape, as this could damage or dislodge your veneers.

Am I a Good Candidate for Veneers?

Come in for a Consultation!

As long as your mouth is healthy and free of issues like cavities and gum disease, you’re likely a good candidate for veneers. However, they may not be the best option if you have orthodontic problems.

While veneers can treat minor smile alignment issues, they may not be a good choice if you have more serious problems with your teeth and bite alignment. You may need treatment with clear aligners or braces before you can have braces. To find out if you’re a good candidate for veneers, contact the office of Dr. Alex W. Scott to schedule a cosmetic consultation.
