DIY vs. Professional Treatments
The Benefits of Professional Whitening
Professional teeth whitening has a number of advantages compared to DIY, at-home whitening. First, it’s safer. If you misuse DIY whiteners, you could cause permanent damage to your teeth or irritate your gums. However, this won’t happen if your teeth are whitened by a professional.
Professional teeth whitening also provides better overall results. All of your teeth will be whitened, and Dr. Scott will be able to customize your treatment based on your level of staining and your desired level of whiteness.
In addition, your results will last longer, and you can always come back to our office to get a periodic whitening touch-up, which will ensure your smile always looks bright and beautiful.
Gradual, Discreet Results
With take-home whitening, you’ll handle the whitening process on your own at home. First, you’ll need to come to our office for a quick appointment with Dr. Scott. He will take impressions of your teeth using dental putty. These will be sent to a lab, where a set of reusable custom whitening trays will be made for you.
When your trays arrive at our office, you’ll come in for a follow-up to pick up your trays and whitening products, and to get instructions from Dr. Scott on how to whiten your teeth at home. Then, you’ll simply follow his instructions and whiten your teeth in the comfort of your own home. In just a few weeks, you’ll have professional-grade results.
If you opt for in-office whitening, first, Dr. Scott will clean your teeth and prepare them for whitening. He will dry your teeth and apply cheek retractors to keep your gums and lips away from the whitener. He will apply a protective coating to your gums to ensure the whitener does not contact and irritate them.
Next, Dr. Scott will apply a layer of KOR whitening gel to every surface of your teeth and let it sit while it whitens your teeth. After a few minutes, the whitener will be rinsed away. Depending on your level of staining and desired results, this process may be repeated several times.
Does Teeth Whitening Have Side Effects?
What to Expect
The only common side effect of teeth whitening is tooth sensitivity. The peroxide-based whiteners used to whiten the teeth can expose “dentinal tubules” that are responsible for transmitting signals to the nerves inside the tooth. This, in turn, makes the tooth more sensitive to heat and cold.
Most patients will no longer have sensitive teeth within 48 hours of treatment. For some, though, it could take a few weeks to get back to normal. We recommend using anti-sensitivity toothpaste like Sensodyne to help with tooth sensitivity.
Am I a Good Candidate for Teeth Whitening?
Come in for a Consultation!
As long as your mouth is healthy and free of any major oral health issues like cavities and gum disease, you’re likely a good candidate for teeth whitening at the office of Dr. Alex W. Scott. However, if you have sensitive teeth, you should inform Dr. Scott during your consultation. It may be necessary to whiten your teeth more gradually to ensure that you do not experience any pain or discomfort during the process.
