What Are Dental Implants?
Understanding the Basics
Dental implants are made out of two primary components. The first is the implant itself, which is shaped like a screw, and is made of titanium. It’s designed to function as an artificial tooth root, and is placed directly into your jaw bone, where it will bond permanently with your jaw tissue to become a natural part of your mouth.
The second part is the dental implant restoration. This can be a dental crown for a single-tooth implant, or multiple implants can be used to support dental bridges or dentures, depending on how many teeth you’re missing. The restoration attaches to the implant after it has healed, restoring your smile and your bite permanently.
What to Expect
The Dental Implant Placement Process
After confirming that implants are right for you, Dr. Harris will refer you to a local oral surgeon for implant placement. Your oral surgeon will clean and numb your mouth, create a small opening in the gums and jaw, and place the implant precisely into the proper location, based on your treatment plan. Then, the area will be cleaned and stitched shut to promote healing, and you’ll be sent home.
Recovering After Placement
The Dental Implant Healing Process
It will take around 2 weeks to heal from the initial process of dental implant placement. Make sure you follow the recovery instructions given to you by Dr. Harris and your oral surgeon so that your mouth heals quickly.
After this, it will take around 3-6 months for your implant to integrate with your jaw tissue through the process of “osseointegration.” You’ll come in for a few follow-up appointments at our office during this time so that we can track your healing & recovery.
Completing Your Implant
The Dental Implant Restoration Process
At your follow-up appointments during the healing process, Dr. Harris will take impressions and images of your mouth, which will be sent to a dental lab. This is where your permanent implant restoration, such as a crown, dental bridge, or set of implant-supported dentures, will be made.
Once your mouth is completely healed and your dental implant restoration has been built, you’ll come in for your final appointment. Dr. Harris will check your implant restoration to ensure it fits properly, then attach it to your dental implant to restore your smile.
