What Can Dental Crowns Treat?
Understanding the Basics
Dental crowns are usually the best choice to treat teeth that have been seriously damaged. They are typically used to treat teeth that have been cracked or broken due to traumatic oral injuries and to restore deep cavities that can’t be treated with dental fillings.
Additionally, dental crowns are commonly used to cover up and protect teeth after they’ve been restored with root canal therapy. They are also sometimes used for purely cosmetic purposes if another treatment, such as a veneer or dental bonding, is deemed unsuitable by Dr. Scott.
What to Expect
The Crown Placement Process
The crown placement process usually takes two appointments over a time period of several weeks. At your first appointment, Dr. Scott must prepare your tooth for your crown. He will begin by cleaning and numbing your mouth, then trimming the tooth to remove any damaged and decayed enamel.
Then, he will take dental impressions of your teeth, which will be sent to our partner dental lab. It will take 2-3 weeks for your permanent crown to be made, so Dr. Scott will attach a temporary crown to your tooth to protect it.
When we receive your crown, we’ll schedule your next appointment. Dr. Scott will remove the temporary crown, clean your tooth, and check your permanent tooth to ensure that it fits. Then, he will bond it into place permanently with dental cement.
Caring for a Dental Crown
What You Need to Know
Dental crowns do not require any special care. Your tooth may be a bit sore for a few days after your treatment, but this will go away quickly. All you need to do to care for your crown is brush twice a day, floss once a day, and see Dr. Scott for an oral exam and teeth cleaning every six months. That’s it!
Stay Comfortable & Relaxed
If you’re nervous about an upcoming appointment at our office for a dental crown, and you’d like to make sure you can relax and feel comfortable during your treatment, Dr. Scott can help. We offer a full range of sedation options including laughing gas sedation, oral conscious sedation, IV sedation, and general anesthesia. Contact us today to see if you’re a good candidate for sedation.
